Movie star, Victoria Broom, is lending her voice to a campaign by new London femme / lipstick lesbian group, Stilettos.
Victoria, lead star in forthcoming horror movie, Deranged, is calling on lesbians who feel invisible - because they don’t look gay, and constantly have their sexuality questioned - to join Stilettos campaign. She says:
“Feminine bi and gay women can feel excluded in gay bars, because they look straight, and straight men hit on them due to the way they dress. They need a place to meet and interact with similar women. Stilettos will break down the fear barrier and allow these women to interact in a safe environment.”
Research by Stilettos, a group dedicated to empowering gay women to be proud of their femininity, shows that its 200 members often avoid the gay scene, because they feel under-represented there, and are sometimes refused entry. Other issues its members have expressed include femme couples being hit on my straight men, and not being asked out by women because it's automatically assumed they are straight.
Stilettos is launching with a special one-off event - a party for femmes - at one of London's most popular lesbian nights, Bijou, on Saturday 9 February. Its organisers hope the event will convince London's club promoters to start recognising and catering for its members:
"It's high time femmes stopped getting refused entry to clubs because of the way they look – and that we had a place where we can meet other femmes in London. We hope this night will convince London bars and club promoters that there is a hidden target market to cater to – and have something like Femme Fridays at their venue."
Stilettos@Bijou is on Saturday 9 February from 9pm-2am at Bijou, (Cos Bar, Queen St) - £10 door entry includes ‘free entry’ to Stilettos femme party on the top floor.
